For most of us, feeling safe, having a voice, a choice and a place to belong is something we don’t regularly consider. This isn’t the case for individuals with diverse abilities.

Here at Winnifred Stewart, we are committed to ensuring that individuals with diverse abilities feel safe, valued, and empowered to thrive. The support we offer promotes independence, inclusion, and well-being, ensuring that every individual in our homes can live a fulfilling and meaningful life. Right now, we face a critical challenge that threatens our mission, we need your help to ensure that these homes remain safe and accessible for individuals like Ron.

I want to share Ron’s story with you—a story that showcases the profound difference your generosity can make.

Ron’s journey with Winnifred Stewart began many years ago when he first attended the organization while it was still a school. In 1996, he took his first steps toward independence by joining the Work Opportunities program. Ron’s continuing desire to stay connected led him to the Community Opportunities program, where he found a new way to engage, pursue his interests, and foster friendships. Today, he stays active through recreational activities and by volunteering on temporary projects and individual events. He finds joy in arts and crafts, baking, and attending local events, which keep him involved in the community he loves.

In January 2024, Ron’s advocacy efforts led to his move to Home 8 at Winnifred Stewart—a milestone he had been working toward for some time. This move was more than just a change of scenery—it represented his wish to enjoy a more self-directed life, all while remaining part of a supportive and caring community. Through his self-advocacy, Ron embodies the values we aim to nurture in everyone we support: the freedom to make choices, the encouragement to pursue personal goals, and the opportunity to belong to a community. His story reflects our ongoing commitment to creating safe, empowering, and inclusive environments for everyone in our care.

Home 8, one of the nine homes operated by Winnifred Stewart, is home to eight individuals, including Ron. Home 8 recently encountered an unexpected challenge: mold resulting from leaks in the bathrooms.

There are four bathrooms in the home, only one of which is designed to meet the evolving mobility needs of the individuals living there. The mold is impacting safety and functionality, and we are taking every step possible to ensure health standards are met (cordoning off and securing the area, testing for air quality). This is not the quality of life we aim to provide for those in our care.

As individuals in the home age, accessibility becomes more essential. While they still require staff support, we prioritize fostering independence by meeting each person’s unique needs at every stage. Unfortunately, the mold and the lack of all four bathrooms being fully accessible makes meeting these independent living goals very challenging.

As part of the initial phase of this essential project, we need to raise atleast $50,000 this holiday season to cover mold removal and bathroom renovations.

Your support of any amount, large or small, is crucial in helping us meet this urgent need. By contributing to these efforts, you’re directly impacting the well-being of Ron and others who call this place home. This work is not only essential for restoring their living space but also aligns with our broader vision of creating safe, accessible, and inclusive environments. These improvements ensure we continue fostering the independence, community, and stability that are central to our mission.

Thank you for believing in our mission. Together, we can ensure that individuals like Ron have the home they deserve—safe, accessible, and full of possibilities.
