Our Mindful Hearts Training Program is in for a big year, thanks to The Stollery Charitable Foundation!

Jeff Bryson, Executive Director of The Stollery Charitable Foundation, paid us a special visit today to deliver a cheque for a $75,000 grant to fund a full-time position for our Mindful Hearts Training Program.

Thanks to this funding, the Winnifred Stewart Association will be able to expand the training program and implement better evaluation tools by partnering with post-secondary institutions.

WSA will be able to move forward with the Mindful Hearts approach, as a resource for all caregivers, family members, and loved ones of people with developmental disabilities also diagnosed with Alzheimer’s and other dementias.

A BIG Thank You to The Edmonton Chinese Lion's Club for their support!

Winnifred Stewart Association’s CEO Sue White & Director of Development Candace Smallwood, were delighted to attend The Edmonton Chinese Lions Clubs (ECLC) board meeting last night, where they were presented with a generous $5,000 donation to support WSA’s Mindful Hearts Training Program.

Thank you so much to ECLC President, Michael Gee and all the members for your kindness and support, we are truly grateful! Thank you to The Dynasty Century Palace restaurant for your hospitality!

Celebrating Winnifred Mary Stewart on International Women's Day #BeBoldForChange

Winnifred Stewart 1979.jpg

Happy International Women’s Day!

On a day like today, we celebrate our beloved Winnifred Mary Stewart

Motivated by a desire to help her son Parker Stewart, who was born with down syndrome, she devoted 20 years to experimental research work into new teaching techniques. Through her approach, her son Parker Stewart achieved a level of development that was previously considered impossible. Dr. Stewart became convinced that schools for children with disabilities were both practical and essential.

In 1954, she was the first woman to address the Alberta Legislature from the floor of the House. This resulted in the first recognition by a government in Canada to provide financial aid to schools for children with disabilities. At its peak, the school served over 450 students, until 1982 when children with disabilities were integrated into the regular school system.

For thousands of families she helped turn despair, frustration and social stigma into hope, understanding and community acceptance.

Today, Winnifred Stewart Association (WSA) carries on the legacy started by Winnifred, and the spirit of its remarkable namesake continues to live on through the organization

Santa Came Early to WSA!

Thanks to Daryn and the great folks at Applied Colour, we have a brand new XBox and projection screen. We have been lucky enough to have Daryn and his team take care of some of the painting projects needed in our houses over the past few months. We are so thankful for their great work and the kindness they have shown in helping us cross some items off our wish list this year. Thank you for these wonderful early Christmas gifts, Applied Colour!

Joey Moss & Friends Golf Tournament

Over $41,000 raised, thanks to your support!

Thank you to everyone who joined us and supported the 1st Annual Joey Moss & Friends Golf Tournament, on Thursday August 16th at The Ranch Golf and Country Club.

The day was an absolute blast, celebrating WSA's 65th Anniversary and Joey's 55th Birthday. The more than 80 golfers in attendance were treated to beverages, wings, burgers, games, and more throughout the course.  The players wrapped up the day reception emceed by the one and only, Gene Principe, a silent auction filled with sports memorabilia and VIP sporting event opportunities, and broke in to a verse of `Happy Birthday' to celebrate Joey Moss turning 55 this coming September.

Thanks to everyone who was involved, we raised more than $41,000 which will go towards enhancing our programs and services for people with disabilities in our community. Thank you to all of our sponsors, donors, volunteers and participants for making this such a memorable day. Scroll down to view the photos from the day!
